It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the fifth annual meeting of the international Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound, to be held in Boston. Therapeutic ultrasound is a rapidly growing field, with a wide range of novel therapies being developed. Some areas of current interest in the field of therapeutic ultrasound include: tumor ablation, stroke, vascular malfunction, and targeted gene and drug delivery. Numerous companies, the world over, have been formed that are dedicated to developing technologies for various ultrasound-based therapies.

Several thousand patients with tumors have been treated with therapeutic ultrasound in recent years. In late 2004, the first focused ultrasound device for tumor therapy was granted FDA approval for the treatment of uterine fibroids in the U.S. Given the recent advances in medical imaging and ultrasound technology, and the increased interest in minimally invasive medicine, this technology will no doubt continue advance rapidly for years to come.

The 5th International Symposium will convene on October 27-29, 2005 in the Conference Center at Harvard Medical School, Boston MA. Its goals, both scientific and educational, are to assess the current state-of-the-art in therapeutic ultrasound, to foster communication among diverse multidisciplinary fields, to identify key problems and their solutions; to provide an overview and basic background for clinical uses of ultrasound therapy, and to share insights among researchers, clinical users and device manufacturers.
